About Deep South Organic Farms
We welcome the opportunity to share this experience and quality food with our family, friends and community. See you soon!
We purchased Deep South Farms because, for years, we were loyal customers based on how well the previous owner built and created the farm. Chris focused on “high quality clean food” and building a sustainable and beautiful operation that adds value to our lives here in Southern Belize. We have long since realized the importance of small organic farms in our communities and we're proud to be part of an increasing community that is focused on food quality and food security.
Our goal is to farm this land in a manner that provides the greatest health benefits with the least negative impact on our environment. With Chris retiring we have taken over farm operations. We are rotating crops to supply the needs of more people and businesses. Product diversity helps us to not rely on any one crop to be sustainable. We are using the principles of organic farming that are based on nourishing plants naturally, building fertile soils, utilizing compost, animal manure, and crop rotations to maintain a healthy, nutrient-rich environment for our plants, animals, and people.
All the animals on our farm are truly-free range animals, encouraged to forage, graze, and roam, with plenty of space, shade, and fresh air. Conditions on our farm are idyllic, clean, and humane. It’s a responsibility that we take very seriously.
Organic centered farms are more resilient to the effects of climate change; soils on organic farms store up to twice as much water, helping to protect against flooding, and performing better during drought. We are adding natural rock barriers to our runoff from the farm to help our surrounding environment.
We have begun the process to add a housing development to the land around our farm using the same principles on the farm to create retention ponds to promote more tree growth with large varieties of vegetation, which in turn supplies an ecosystem for insects, plants and animals that benefit the farm as well. We plan on relying mostly on renewable resources and we have plenty of fresh spring water year-round.
